Surf, shallows, little space: in certain conditions, some harbour entrances become a witches' cauldron. How sailors master them and get home safely

On 18 April 2017, the Bavaria "Dipiù" wrecks at the harbour pier in Rimini on the Adriatic coast - four people die. In 2013, the German X-Yacht "Meri Tuuli" runs aground at the entrance to Figueira da Foz in Portugal - two people are killed. In 2009, the steel yacht "Taube" capsized while approaching the Moroccan Atlantic coast - six people died.

All these dramatic accidents are a reminder that the trip is not over when the harbour entrance comes into sight, but that full concentration is required from the skipper and crew over the last few miles, or even metres.
